Venice floods regularly between October and March. Most of the time vaporetti keep running — but specific stops close at specific tide levels. Here is the threshold table and the live-info app you should install.
Booked via GetYourGuide
Acqua alta is the seasonal high tide in the Venice lagoon. Below 80 cm above mean sea level, nothing happens. Above 80 cm, low parts of the historic centre start to flood. Above 110 cm, more than 11% of the city is underwater.
Since 2020 the MOSE barriers can close the lagoon mouth at high-tide events, capping the level. So even on a forecast 140 cm day, the actual measured tide inside the lagoon may only reach 110 cm.
Line 3 (direct Murano express) is suspended. All other lines continue.
The Zattere stop towards San Marco and Lido is suspended. Other Zattere stops remain.
Access to some pontoons (particularly Lido S.M.E. low gangways and several minor lagoon pontoons) is blocked. Walking under the lower bridges becomes impossible.
MOSE typically closes by this point. Vaporetto service is heavily reduced; the city advises against unnecessary movement.
Mostly October through March, with November and December being the peak. Outside that window the lagoon is at normal levels and acqua alta is rare.
Usually no — vaporetti keep running through most floods. The voucher also works on any day, so you can simply use it later. Cancel only if the tide is forecast above 140 cm and MOSE is closing.
Yes — ACTV keeps a careful eye on safety. Above 120 cm they close pontoons rather than risk passengers. Sirens warn locals and visitors equally; the AVM app updates live. Standard sensible behaviour, no panic needed.
Official ACTV ticket via GetYourGuide. Use on any day. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before use.
