How the Venice Vaporetto ticket system works

There is only one "Venice Vaporetto ticket": the official ACTV Rete Unica fare. It covers every vaporetto, every city bus, every tram, the People Mover and the Lido buses. What you choose is the time window — from a single 75-minute ride up to 7 days.

GetYourGuide resells the same ticket as a flexible voucher. You pay before you go, the voucher hits your inbox in seconds, and you redeem it for the physical ACTV ticket at any machine when you arrive. Use it on any day — the clock only starts when you first tap.

Compare every Vaporetto ticket side-by-side

Below: every variant in one table. The 24-hour ticket is the only one that also includes Trenitalia regional trains within Venice; the 72-hour ticket is the most popular choice for a typical 3-day stay.

What 22,529 travellers say about the Vaporetto ticket

4.5 out of 5 stars on GetYourGuide — 72% give the Vaporetto ticket five stars. A few of the most recent reviews:

★★★★★

“Works nicely. Tickets could be retrieved with the voucher number directly at our bus station (white/yellow ticket machine).”

★★★★★

“Easy to redeem the tickets and so convenient to use and travel around Venice, Murano and Burano at our own pace. Highly recommended rather than joining a tour.”

★★★★★

“The way to go when in Venice. A sure money-saver since the waterbus is the only means of transfer from one place to another, especially if you want to visit Murano and Burano. Without a pass, each ride costs you about €11.”

★★★★★

“Easy to use, but you need to exchange the voucher for a ticket at the ferry terminal. I did this on arrival from the main station, was really easy to follow and took literally a few minutes.”

★★★★★

“Great! Easy to use and saw so much more than just Venice. The vaporetti that went to the outer islands were so much fun.”

★★★★★

“Great way to see Venice and all the islands. Better value and more fun than a gondola. The ticket worked perfectly at the machine first time — and the screen is in English if you are worried.”

When does each Vaporetto ticket pay off?

Rule of thumb in Venice: every island trip already needs at least two vaporetto rides each way. Plan one island day plus normal city use, and a multi-day ticket beats single fares quickly.

Just passing through

A single 75-minute ticket is enough if you only need one ride — for example, station to your hotel and that's it. Below three rides a day, single tickets stay cheaper than the 24-hour ticket.

One packed day, train-friendly

The 24-hour ticket pays off from your third ride. Pick this one if you also need the regional train between Mestre, Marghera and Venezia Santa Lucia.

Two to three days in Venice

For two full days the 48-hour ticket already saves money. For three, the 72-hour ticket is the best balance — and it is the one most travellers buy.

A long stay or many island trips

Going to Murano, Burano, Torcello, Lido and Pellestrina across the week? The 7-day ticket pays off after about eight rides and removes all ticket worries until you leave.

What every Vaporetto ticket covers

The same coverage applies to every variant. Only the 24-hour Vaporetto ticket adds Trenitalia regional trains inside the city.

Included on every variant

  • All Vaporetto lines in the historic centre and the lagoon (Murano, Burano, Torcello, Lido, Pellestrina)
  • Mainland buses in Mestre and Marghera, plus trams T1 and T2
  • The People Mover (Piazzale Roma ↔ Marittima ↔ Tronchetto)
  • All Lido buses (lines A, B, V, N)
  • The Ferry-Boat line 17 (Tronchetto ↔ Lido San Nicolò, on foot)
  • Line 11 (Lido → Pellestrina → Chioggia) — bus + ferry combined

Never included — book separately

  • Does not cover the bus or boat from Marco Polo Airport
  • Alilaguna airport boat (Blue / Orange / Red)
  • Water taxis, gondolas, traghetto
  • Casino shuttle, Line 16 (Fusina)

Vaporetto ticket FAQ

For a typical 2 to 4-day visit the 72-hour Vaporetto ticket is the most popular choice. If you arrive by train, sleep on the mainland, or just need one packed day in the city, pick the 24-hour ticket — it is the only one that also covers the regional train. For one short ride, a 75-minute single is enough.

No — it is the same official ACTV ticket. GetYourGuide sells a voucher you pay for before you arrive; you redeem the voucher at any Venezia Unica machine and get the identical physical Rete Unica ticket. The price is the same as on the machine.

You can use your ticket on any day — not necessarily the calendar date you bought it on. The clock only starts when you first tap the ticket on a yellow Tappy reader. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before use also applies.

No. Every passenger needs their own ticket from the age of 6. Children stay free until their 6th birthday. There is no shared family ticket and no group discount on the standard Rete Unica fare.

The 48-hour ticket is €15 cheaper for two days of city use (€35 vs. €50). The only reason to buy two separate 24-hour tickets is if you need the Trenitalia regional train on both days — which is unusual.
