Venice vaporetto stations — and why the wrong pontoon is the classic mistake

Many big stops have several pontoons — one per direction, sometimes one per line. Boarding at the wrong letter costs you 15 minutes. Here is the cheat-sheet for the five most-confused stations.

How the pontoon system works

Each big vaporetto stop has multiple landing platforms ("pontili"), labelled A, B, C, D and so on. Different lines or directions board from different letters. Every pontoon has an electronic sign above the entrance showing the line number, the direction, and the next departure time, live.

Piazzale Roma — 7 pontoons (B–G)

Pontoon "B" or "C": Line 1 and Line 2 (departure side). Pontoon "D": Line 3 to Murano. Pontoon "E"–"G": Lines 4.1/4.2, 5.1/5.2, 6. Walk along the Rio Nuovo and watch the signs — they update live.

Fondamente Nove — 4 pontoons (A–D)

Pontoon "A": Line 12 to Murano, Burano, Torcello. Pontoon "B" or "C": Lines 4.1/4.2 outer ring. Pontoon "D": Lines 5.1/5.2 and Line 13 to Sant'Erasmo. Confusing because both Line 12 and Lines 4.1/4.2 reach Murano — different speed and route.

San Marco-San Zaccaria — 6 pontoons (A–F)

A long riva with multiple platforms. Pontoon "A": Lines 2 and N. Pontoon "B": Line 4.1/4.2 from San Zaccaria. Pontoon "C"–"D": Line 1. Pontoon "E"–"F": Lines 14 and 20 to Punta Sabbioni and San Lazzaro. Allow extra time to find the right one.

Rialto — 4 pontoons (A–D)

Either side of the bridge has two pontoons. North side: A (Line 1 down-canal) and B (Line 2). South side: C (Line 1 up-canal) and D. The direction matters more than the letter — read the sign.

Lido S.M.E. — 5 pontoons (A–E)

Pontoon "A": Line 5.1 (anti-clockwise outer ring). Pontoon "B": Line 5.2. Pontoon "C": Line 14 to/from Punta Sabbioni. Pontoon "D": Line 1 from/to the Grand Canal. Pontoon "E": Line 10 and small operators.

How to read the electronic sign

Every pontoon has a yellow/blue digital sign showing two pieces of information that matter to you.

Line number + final destination

For example "12 → Burano" or "1 → Lido". This is the direction of travel — make sure it matches where you want to go.

Next departure time

Updated in real time. If the next vaporetto is 18 minutes away on this pontoon but the line you want runs every 12 minutes, you are at the wrong letter — walk to the next sign.

Marco Polo airport bus is separate. Does not cover the bus or boat from Marco Polo Airport — see airport transfer options.

Pontoon FAQ

Check the electronic sign. If your line is not listed, you are at the wrong pontoon — walk to the next letter along the same riva. If the line is listed but the wait is long, check whether you confused direction (eg. "→ Lido" vs "→ Piazzale Roma").

Yes — "AVM Venezia Official" on iOS and Android. Free, no account needed, with live departures and disruption alerts. The website orari.actv.it shows the same data on a browser.

Often yes. Within the historic centre, walking is usually faster than the vaporetto — Venice is 4 km end-to-end. Use the boat for crossing the Grand Canal, the islands, or when you have luggage.
