Twenty stops, the entire Grand Canal, San Marco, Castello, the Lido. About 45 minutes end-to-end. This is the first ride almost every visitor takes — and the best 9.50 euros you spend in Venice.
Line 1
Line 1 — the Grand Canal classic
Line 1 is the slow but complete Grand Canal vaporetto. It stops at every landmark — Ferrovia, Ca' d'Oro, Rialto, Accademia, Salute, San Marco — and continues into the Bacino, the Arsenale and out to Lido San Maria Elisabetta. Big windows, wide boats, perfect for first arrivals.
Board at Ferrovia or Piazzale Roma. Sit at the very back of the boat (the open-air deck) for the best photos. Get off at San Marco-Vallaresso for Piazza San Marco or at Salute for the Punta della Dogana.
Mid-morning, after the cruise crowd has cleared, ride Line 1 with a coffee. Get off at Ca' d'Oro for the gold palazzo, Rialto for the bridge and market, Accademia for the gallery.
After a Lido afternoon, board Line 1 at Lido S.M.E. and ride it back through Sant'Elena, Giardini, Arsenale, the Bacino, San Marco — sunset on the Grand Canal in 45 minutes.
Line 1 is the only vaporetto that stops at every single Grand Canal landmark. Each stop opens up a different chapter of Venice.
Across the canal from San Simeone Piccolo — your first iconic view if you arrive by train.
The "House of Gold" — late-Gothic palazzo with a museum inside (Galleria Franchetti). One of the most ornate facades on the canal.
The Rialto Mercato stop drops you at the city's historic fish and produce market. Cross the Rialto bridge for the classic San Polo souvenir streets.
Accademia gallery (Bellini, Tintoretto, Veronese) and the modern Punta della Dogana art space at the tip of Dorsoduro.
The white-domed Santa Maria della Salute — one of Venice's most photographed churches, directly at its own vaporetto stop.
The Vallaresso stop is the closest landing to Piazza San Marco, Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs — three minutes on foot.
Castello sights: the historic shipyard Arsenale (worth seeing during the Biennale) and the Giardini park with the Biennale pavilions.
End of the line — Venice's long beach island. Walk Gran Viale for 15 minutes for the public beach and the Belle Époque Hotel Excelsior.
About 45 minutes from Piazzale Roma to San Marco-San Zaccaria, with all stops. Continuing on to Lido takes an additional 30 minutes.
On the open-air deck at the back. The front seats are popular, but the rear gives you the canal opening up behind you — better for photos. Bring a hat in summer.
Until about 23:41 (last departure from Piazzale Roma). After that the N night service takes over with similar Grand Canal stops, running until around 04:30.
Yes — every Vaporetto ticket variant includes Line 1, from the 75-minute single to the 7-day ticket. Marco Polo airport buses and Alilaguna boats are still separate.
