How Venice numbers its Vaporetto lines

Lines 1 and 2 run through the Grand Canal. Lines 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2 and 6 are circolari — loops around the outer edge of the historic centre. Lines 9 and up serve the lagoon islands. Lines starting with "N" run at night. Numbers 16, 19 and the Casino shuttle are NOT included in the Vaporetto ticket.

The four lines first-time visitors actually use

Line 1, Line 2, Lines 4.1/4.2 and Line 12 cover the vast majority of tourist trips. Detail page links below the card.

Pontoon tip — Many big stops (Piazzale Roma, San Marco, Fondamente Nove, Rialto, Lido) have several pontoons, one per direction or line. Always look at the electronic sign above the pontoon — it shows the line number, the direction and the next departure time live.

Vaporetto line FAQ

Line 1 from Piazzale Roma to San Marco — it stops at every Grand Canal landmark, so you see the whole city from the water on your first ride. Sit at the back for the best view.

Line 2 via Giudecca, around 25 minutes. Line 2's Grand Canal variant runs only during the daytime (about 09:25–20:07). Outside those hours Line 2 detours via Giudecca but stays the fastest option.

Line 12 from Fondamente Nove. It runs every 20 minutes during the day and stops at Murano Faro, Mazzorbo, Torcello (on request) and Burano. The full ride to Burano takes about 45 minutes.

Yes. The N line replaces Lines 1 and 2 at night, running about every 20 minutes from 23:30 to 01:30, then hourly until 04:30. It uses the Grand Canal, so you do not lose central stops. NLN serves the northern lagoon.

Every line has an official PDF timetable on avm.avmspa.it — linked in the cards above. For real-time disruptions, use the AVM Venezia Official app or orari.actv.it.
